On July 4, tourists will again be allowed to get inside the Statue of Liberty's head.
The observation deck up there, with windows cut through Lady Liberty's crown, has been closed since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The public's fears about terrorism served as easy cover for those who hated allowing access in the first place: The 12-story spiral staircase inside (the only means of access) didn't meet modern emergency-exit standards, they argued, and moreover the statue's builders never intended it to be toured this way. So, the crown remained closed long after some post-9/11 restrictions faded into memory. Now the Obama administration, with its focus on capital-H Hope, is putting Worry aside and letting people in again.
