WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama is lauding the passage of historic anti-smoking legislation that gives the government sweeping authority to regulate tobacco products, pledging to quickly sign the measure into law.

The House moved quickly Friday to pass the Senate’s tobacco bill and send it to the White House, where President Obama promised to sign it.

The Obama Administration continues to insist, all Congressional evidence to the contrary notwithstanding, that Uncle Sam has no interest in running the U.S. auto industry. About the tobacco industry there is no such Washington scruple on either end of Pennsylvania Avenue.



Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act

The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, H.R. 1256 is a proposed United States federal law that would give the Food and Drug Administration the power to regulate the multi-million dollar tobacco industry and aims to discourage minors and young adults from smoking through new FDA-imposed warnings and labels.
